Inverting Color Negative Film - Advanced Tutorial
This video is to add on to my last tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/ylIyA6wQGcY/v-deo.html
This is a more difficult night scene where the film was a bit underexposed, making it harder to choose a white point and requiring some extra tweaks compared to the easy daylight image I showed you last time. There is also an introduction to luminosity masks in this video.
To get the luminosity mask action go here: www.alexburkephoto.com/blog/2015/03/10/luminosity-masks-and-film-scans
And for the general description of the process see this blog post: www.alexburkephoto.com/blog/2019/10/16/manual-inversion-of-color-negative-film

These clips are from two of my countless adventures to the high country this winter, waiting out light and enjoying mornings completely immersed in nature without another human in sight. The difference in conditions over the span of a few days is outstanding, from a calm peaceful morning after ...

Here's a clip of the conditions on my hike this morning. I quite enjoy these breezy mornings after a storm where the fresh snow blows across this clearing and creates a dramatic effect to the sun behind the krummholz trees. It's no wonder these pines can't stand up straight, they spend much of the year facing conditions like this.

    Hi Alex. I've recently stumbled on your work as I'm venturing into 4x5 and your website article on choosing a 4x5 camera and lenses is such a great resource. Your portfolio is superb. Please do consider making more content for UA-cam. With the resurgence in analog photography over the last few years and film manufacturers making film stocks again, I can't think of a better time to share your work and processes on here. I for one would love to see you in the field crafting your images as you are among the very best LF photographers in the world imho who deserves a much larger audience. Thanks for all of the resources on your website also. Cheers from the UK 👍

    Excellent tutorial. I'm so grateful UA-cam still pushes this video 4 years later. In just one go I was able to correct my photo for free (albeit with Photo Shop owned). Extremely useful information with no annoying sponsorships, amazingly straightforward, and easy to follow in a much more modern version of the software.

    Thanks for the video. Given the cost of software like Lightroom, it's quite bad that there's no function for basic conversions and that it all must be done manually. I guess it shows that AI, despite its power, can't be trusted to automate things that relate to 'taste'. I suppose Adobe's tests thus far have produced weird results and strange colours.

    Hey! Currently looking at getting probably an RZ67, is it possible to make 6x7 look good as a 6-8’ wide print or is that too crazy?

    • @AlexBurke
      @AlexBurke 6 місяців тому

      That's always a challenging question and depends on your expectations. That's asking a lot from 6x7cm film, but the print would likely look quite good if you stood back to a distance where it can be appreciated in full. If you get close to the print, the grain size will be large and sharpness not all that incredible. But generally we shouldn't be viewing prints that closely anyway.

    When you said color negative film is too blue- well the film base is orange and orange is the inverse of blue. Is this a question of not compensating enough for the film base? Or is this just a coincidence? Also I've always wondered why when you photograph a negative you have a histogram that covers the entire tonal range but when you invert it you have a new histogram that only covers about half of the tonal range. Is this the way it will always work or is this a quirk of the software?

    I was a scanner operator for a many years, ran a Crosfield 646 horizontal drum scanner and then a Hell scanner like the one in your video. The last scanner I ran was a flatbed Scitex scanner, nowhere near as good as the drum scanners, you couldn't do oil mounting with the flatbed which made for dusty scans. Was a great trade back in the good old days of print.

  • @uribak9144
    @uribak9144 7 місяців тому

    From my experience, the Scitex EverSmart Supreme flatbed scanner, was a better scanner than the drum and much sharper.

    Just wow those transparencies on the lightbox @ 0:52

  • @teresashinkansen9402
    @teresashinkansen9402 9 місяців тому

    I think the magic here is the way the film is mounted on the drum, placing a medium with higher IOR than air between the interfaces between the drum and the film will reduce reflections, fringing and increase contrast, I think this is the key, i wonder what would happen if I were to add some water to a flat bed scanner? of course after tinkering with it so it can handle the water.

    • @AlexBurke
      @AlexBurke 9 місяців тому

      People wet mount on their flatbeds all the time. Definitely don't use water, use a proper mounting fluid such as Kami. The difference is very slight on a flatbed. There can be a reduction in dust and scratches, and some people may find a little more sharpness, but it generally doesn't really work a miracle with the flatbed scanner optics.

    Question for you Alex, does a fresnel go against ground glass inside camera or outside ?. The rise and fall how to you set to 0, there are no stops ?

    • @AlexBurke
      @AlexBurke Рік тому

      That is a topic of much eternal argument. Placing it on the lens side of the GG can cause an *extremely minor* focus shift, but protects it from scratches. Placing it on the outside causes no focus shift but you'll scratch the hell out of it. Either way you cannot move the ground glass at all, that is critical. There is no need to have zeroing marks for front rise, that's something you'll just set visually. Level the camera, set the rise to where you need it for the composition and you'll be fine.
